Big Plans

So I'm making plans.

For many years, talking about the future was like some sort of taboo. I just didn't do it. Ridiculously, I feared jinxing what I now know would never have worked. Lesson learned, hindsight 20/20, and all that jazz. I've moved on to the bigger and the much better and I know my life is taking me where I was meant to be.

And I'm excited.

First. I love where I work, and ideally something will come of it. I'm actually hoping for permanency, which is weird. I know I don't seem like the kind of girl who likes change--what with my pressing need to nest wherever I go, and my overwhelming preference to preserve tradition--but the Human Sea Cucumber rubbed off on me. There is some sort of appeal in not knowing what will come, or being tied to one place. With nothing holding me down, I have options. And I can still comfortably use the phrase "When I grow up I want to..."

Banking on this (a permanent job and thus a career), my first plan involves a condo. The minute a permanent job is on the table, I will buy a home. Perhaps Mr. and Mrs. Beef have rubbed off on me, the reality that their cosy gingerbread dream came to fruition. I too would like a place of my own. I want to paint it the colors I love. I want to put my paintings and pictures on the walls. I want to fill it with my stuff.

The second is something completely different from the first, and perhaps a little easier to believe (easier for me to believe, maybe not so easy for you, Dear Reader). In January, at the end of the contract, I want to take another GAP trip. And I already have it picked out.

I will go to Morocco. Starting in Casablanca, ending in Marrakesh. Fourteen days, January 5th to January 18th. And I think I will most likely be doing it on my own, the idea of which is scarier to me than a $200,000 mortgage. But I'm really thinking on this. Drastically different than plan number one, but equally as exciting, and equally as far from where I thought I would be some 12 months ago.

So... What do you think?

lookit me! i am on a trip alone. and if i can be alone, anyone can be alone. and a gap adventures trip is nice because you have a group of people with you doing the same thing. i approve. there's a website called travelaloneandloveit.com for people who go on alone adventures, and there is a new book that pants told me about for women who take trips alone, and all the fun they can have. i think morocco would be fantastic. i would almost invite myself along except for the whole "alone" challenge. after my heartache i decided i would do what i needed to in order to fulfill my life, and travelling to lots of places seems like part of that.

hooray for you! hooray for me! i am so excited and envious!

Thanks, Sleeves! Pants, what's the book?

p.s. You're envious of me? Pfft. You're in Galaway throwing CAWs out into the sea, remember?! Now that's something to envy (although I bet you were wishing you were in SoOh on Friday the 13th...)

Very exciting future ahead! I think that travels can change a person, in all good ways. Open eyes and finds a different love for life etc... I am an addict to travel, as I think you know...

Morocco sounds wondeful - I've never been but it's up there on my list of places to go!

Try thorntree.lonelyplanet.com for advice from other travelers. More than excited for you Library Lady! I look forward to hearing about those plans...

Morocco - excellent choice. Met tons of people in my travels who had been there and they absolutely loved it. Actually wanted to go there for honeymoon but not really a cost effective choice. So I say YEA! Go for it.

Very excited for you! A condo sounds like a great idea! Morocco would definately be an interesting trip. I think doing a GAP trip alone would be a wonderful adventure and a great way to meet people. Cheers to you!

I am also jealous of you. I wish that I could go on one of those trips that we talked about and planned many years ago. So, as my life will probably not allow it at the time of your departure I will live vicariously through you!

Oh my god, I so want to go to Morroco. Good choice. I'm tempted to also make you take me with you, but traveling alone makes you feel so Beyonce (get it - "Independent Women" anyone?), that I would never take that away from you.

Dooo it.

Super duper fun plans ... do it... travel alone .. if I can do it ... ms nervy b than you can! I found it gave me a lot of confidence and we both know GAP trips are wickedly awesome!!! Super exciting! Trips are fun for the before and the during parts ... what to bring ... reading about the places and than actually going is of course the true adventure!! I love that you are planning on condos and such and such ... i don't want you running off anytime soon. Only one of us can leave the hammer at one time and than maybe finally when I come back home we'll be finally nesting in the same place for an extended period of time (or we will have to wait until we move into the retirement home to do that!)

Fingers!

I remember that I hated visiting the "Tour of Nations" or whatever it's called at Epcot Center until I visited Morocco. I was 9 or 10 and my dad bought me a charm bracelet that jingled when I walked. Since then I've always wanted to visit to get a real one from the real place. I think this trip is a brilliant idea...watch out for the gypsys (don't they come from Morocco?)
